The Medicinal Plant
Garden was started
with a generous donation of plants by Mom's Head
Gardens and the Sonoma County Herb Association. Volunteers have nurtured
and cared for the garden's wide variety of native, Mediterranean,
European, and Asian medicinal herbs throughout its development. Designed to be an educational garden, each plant is indicated by an informative sign explaining its
traditional uses by Native Americans, the early pioneers and Chinese
medical practitioners.
Many of these herbs are currently being
used to treat illnesses like cancer, heart disease, depression,
digestive disorders, and anxiety, and, thanks to scientific
research, are now recognized as a worthwhile
part of Western medicine. Some of the herbs included
in the garden are
agrimony, lemon balm, spearmint, echinacea, yarrow, lavender,
sage, mullein, evening primrose, hyssop, false blue indigo, tea tree, houttinya,
black cohosh, apothecary rose,
chamomile, calendula, monkshood, rosemary, white sage, balloon flower,
blackberry lily, peppermint, southernwood, mugwort, fo-ti, marshmallow, sweet annie, rue,
vervain, valerian root, yerba mansa, motherwort, gumweed, yerba buena, and many others.
