On Depression

When you are depressed, you tell yourself you are not good enough. Indeed you are feeling as though you are never enough and this condition will never change. You may feel as though there is nothing you can do to add or subtract from this ‘fact.’ This pronouncement is the punishment you think you deserve.

Why stop? After all, you are not worthy of love and joy.  You use the impact depression has on you as an example of just how flawed and defective you really are.  Your limitations and blockages are proof of your inadequacy. You have failed to measure up to the standards you set for yourself which are harsh criteria selected to disable you. You then catalog the evidence of your failure as a worthwhile human being.  This 'hammering' is one form anger toward yourself takes.

When you accept who you are, approval and disapproval are no longer required. Compassion appears instead. Embrace who you are rather than condemning yourself to the trash bin. You are, after all, a part of God and that is a stunning fact indeed.
